1970年台灣獨立聯盟（WUFI）成立後，「島內文宣組」的莊秋雄先生以符號「△」、「○」設計台字旗，作為台灣獨立運動的標誌。
兩符號上下疊在一起既像「台」字，也像戴斗笠的農夫。在1978年第九期《台独INDEPENDENT TAIWAN》封面印有此標誌，並說明它代表頭戴草笠，長年經受壓迫的台灣人民，象徵著台灣人民獨立自救以求當家做主的強烈願望及決心。

1970年に台湾独立連盟（WUFI）が設立された後、「島内文宣組」の荘秋雄氏は、記号「△」と「○」を組み合わせたデザインで「台」字旗を制作し、台湾独立運動のシンボルとしました。この2つの記号を上下に重ねた形は、「台」字に似ているとともに、笠をかぶった農夫の姿にも見えます。このシンボルは、1978年に発行された『台独INDEPENDENT TAIWAN』第9号の表紙に印刷され、「笠をかぶり、長年の圧迫を受けてきた台湾の人々」を象徴し、台湾の人々が独立を目指して自立し、主権を握るという強い願望と決意を示しているとされています。

In 1970, the World United Formosans for Independence (WUFI) was established, marking a pivotal moment in Taiwan’s independence movement. Strong Chuang, head of WUFI’s Domestic Propaganda Unit, designed a flag symbolizing Taiwan’s quest for independence. The emblem features a triangle (△) placed atop a circle (○), forming a shape reminiscent of the Chinese character “台” (Tai), which signifies Taiwan. The design also evokes the image of a farmer wearing a traditional Asian conical hat, representing Taiwan’s grassroots people. In 1978, the emblem appeared on the cover of the ninth issue of INDEPENDENT TAIWAN, accompanied by a caption stating that the symbol represents the long-oppressed people of Taiwan, who endured hardship under authoritarian rule, and embodies their steadfast aspiration and determination to achieve self-rule and national independence.
